The Old Castle / The Old Mint (Darrtorstraße 3-5)
At the end of the 15th Century the “Stork’s Nest Inn”, which belonged to the noble Boner family stood on the site of the Old Castle. Around 1600 the medieval structure was demolished and the castle-like building was erected in its present form. Sixty years later the complex came into the ownership of the Dukes of Saxony. From the 18th Century it was the home of the ducal mint. This is where the name “Alte Münze” or “Old Mint” originated. For a while it housed the Saalfeld Mining Office. Today it serves as administrative offices.
To continue your guided tour you should now return to the market place. From the middle of the square look across to the row of houses standing opposite the Town Hall. This complex is called the “Liden”.
