The Blankenburg Gate (Am Blankenburger Tor)

The Blankenburg Gate was the entrance to the town from the north.

It is the fourth and last of the remaining gate towers of the town’s medieval defences. In the 18th Century, because of its dilapidated state, the tower was reduced to two storeys and given a baroque roof construction similar to that on the Upper Gate.

Due to the ever-increasing amount of trade traffic, the narrow pointed archway was supplemented by an additional round archway. It was here, in this street that salt, honey and spices were traded. Saalfeld merchants had to argue with unscrupulous salesmen, as cunning traders often haggled over the spices.

The gate leads you to the main pedestrianized shopping street of the town, the Blankenburger Strasse. Your next stop ; the Hiltmann House, is on the left hand side.
