The former Church of St Nicholas (Schwarmgasse 21-31)

In the 12th Century St Nicholas’s Church is said to have been the official church of the regional court of the Archbishop of Cologne. It also served as the parish church. It is therefore the oldest church building in the town. After the 13th Century the building was used as the municipal corn exchange, a riding hall and a sugar- beet factory. In the 19th Century the town’s almshouse was established in St Nicholas’s Church. Today the building is a dwelling house and the only remnants of the earlier church building are the small round-arched windows on the 24 Metre long façade.

Make your way from the Church of St Nicholas to the right and go through the small arch to the ”Hoher Schwarm“ castle ruins, the icon of Saalfeld.
